Dental Implants in Pacific Beach

Missing teeth are detrimental to oral health and the beauty of a smile. One of the best ways to replace a missing tooth is with a dental restoration known as an implant. Implants are placed directly in the jawbone and support a life-like artificial tooth. Dr. Ricardo Hernandez of Pacific Beach Smile Studio regularly recommends dental implants to restore normal appearance, function and health to the teeth.

The Advantages of Dental Implants

There are many benefits to replacing a missing tooth with an implant. Implants:

  • restore normal chewing function
  • restore the appearance of a full set of teeth
  • prevent the surrounding teeth from shifting around in the mouth
  • close gaps in which harmful bacteria can accumulate
  • stimulate the jawbone to prevent bone loss and the collapse of the facial structures
  • keep the bite properly aligned

Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or all of the teeth in the upper jaw, lower jaw or both. Depending on the needs of the individual patient, implants can support a crown, bridgework or a set of dentures.

Dental Implant Treatment with Dr. Hernandez

The placement and restoration of dental implants is a multi-step process. The first step is to place the implant post securely in your jawbone. The implant post will be placed directly in your jawbone, creating a stable base for the artificial tooth. Anesthesia will be used during this step for your complete comfort. It takes several months for the implant to properly integrate with your jawbone (a period called osseointegration). After osseointegration is complete, a piece called an abutment will be attached to the top of your implant post to connect the post and the crown. The crown will be custom-crafted to your exact measurements and Dr. Hernandez’s specifications; it should blend in with your surrounding teeth and fit comfortably.

If you need an entire arch of teeth replaced, Dr. Hernandez may recommend that you have several implant posts placed to support a denture prosthesis. Traditional dentures restore the look of the teeth, but they sit on the top of the gums virtually unsecured. Implant posts keep the dentures in place at all times. Also, since the posts are placed in the jawbone, they keep the bone stimulated and healthy and prevent deterioration.

Implants should be cared for like a natural tooth. Although they cannot develop cavities, they should be brushed and flossed daily. It is crucial to remove any debris that gets wedged between an implant and the surrounding teeth. Implants also need to be regularly checked by Dr. Hernandez; he can monitor their functionality and keep an eye out for any problems.
