Invisalign Candidate

Is Invisalign Right for Me?: How to Know if You’re a Good Candidate for Invisalign

Orthodontists are now treating more teens with clear aligners than with traditional braces.

Does you or your child need braces? Do you hate the thought of wearing uncomfortable metal wires and having a mouth full of metal, likely for years?

Fortunately, there is a viable alternative to metal braces that might work for you.

Invisalign is a method of orthodontic correction that uses a system of custom-made clear aligners that are gradually switched out and replaced over time to straighten your teeth. They are much more convenient and comfortable than traditional braces and just as effective.

Perhaps you are wondering whether Invisalign is right for you. Read on to determine whether you or your child is a good Invisalign candidate.

It Depends on Your Teeth

If your teeth are not severely crooked and you don’t have any other severe issues going on, Invisalign should work for you. Invisalign can correct most crooked teeth and can even correct other common problems like crowded teeth, under-bites, overbites, gaps, and cross-bites. However, if any of these issues are severe, they might require more advanced orthodontic techniques.

For traditional cases, Invisalign treatment will take about the same amount of time as traditional braces and the cost will be about the same.

Are You Committed?

One of the upsides of Invisalign can also be a downside if you are not committed to the process. Unlike metal braces, which are glued on for years, Invisalign trays can be removed at any time. This may present a temptation to those not seriously committed to straightening their teeth. You must wear your retainers all or most of the day, despite the temptation to pop them out. Fortunately, Invisalign retainers are clear and unnoticeable so with proper dedication to the process, there is no need to remove them.

You will need to wear retainers for the rest of your life after completion of treatment. This is the case with traditional braces as well as Invisalign. The commitment to straight teeth goes beyond just the period of treatment.

How Old Are You?

Unfortunately, Invisalign cannot be used on young children. Children under age 13 have teeth that are still growing and therefore are constantly changing. It is impossible to create custom Invisalign treatments for them when their teeth are not fully developed.

Fortunately, most children age 13 and above are candidates for Invisalign. We can determine whether your child’s teeth are fully developed and whether Invisalign is right for you.

Fortunately, there is no age cap for the Invisalign product. You are never too old for Invisalign!
