What Are the Different Types of Braces? and Which Are Best for You? Find Out Here!

When people used to think of braces, they thought of only one thing: metal brackets and wires. Now, though, orthodontists provide many different types of braces for their patients to choose from.

If you’re interested in joining the four million Americans who wear braces, you have quite a few options to consider when it comes to deciding how you’ll go about straightening your teeth.

Read on to learn more about the different types of braces to figure out which one is best for you.

Benefits of Straight Teeth

Braces are beneficial for both children and adults. When their teeth are straight, people typically feel more confident and are more inclined to smile.

Straight teeth also provide a number of important health benefits. Your risk of tooth loss and decay decreases when your teeth are straight, and you may experience fewer headaches and better digestion.

Types of Braces

If you’re interested in reaping the aesthetic and functional benefits of straight teeth, braces are your best option. Listed below are some of the different types you can choose from:

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most noticeable option. But, they’re also the least expensive.

Modern versions of these braces are a little more discrete than the metal braces of the past, though. They’ve also been updated to work more quickly and less painfully than they used to.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective tooth straightening treatment and don’t mind the appearance of metal brackets and wires, traditional braces are the way to go.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are just like traditional metal braces. But, they are made with either tooth-colored or clear brackets. Some orthodontists also use tooth-colored wires.

These materials make ceramic braces much less noticeable than traditional metal braces. Ceramic braces are more expensive than metal braces, though. They can also stain quite easily if you’re not careful.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are worn on the inside of teeth, closest to the tongue. They’re completely invisible from the outside. This makes them a great option for people who want to straighten their teeth on the down-low.

They are not ideal for severely crooked teeth or people with severe bite issues, though. They are also more expensive than metal or ceramic braces. And, because of their location, they can be difficult to clean and adjust.

Invisalign

Invisalign retainers a great option for people who want to straighten their teeth in the most discrete and convenient way possible.

You can remove Invisalign retainers for eating, drinking, and cleaning. They’re easier to maintain than other tooth straightening options, too. You’re also less likely to deal with cavities or other dental issues while wearing them.

They are also more expensive, though, and they’re only available to adults and teenagers.
